about

"To mark my Pumphouse performance at the Aldeburgh Festival 2019, I’m releasing this improv track from my first solo gig which was in the same venue at the same festival back in June 2003. This is a particularly meaningful gig for me as it was the point I realised that the immediacy of performing was something I felt deeply and was committed to.

I’d originally attended the festival, which is down the road from where I grew up, because I wanted to be a composer, but luckily for me they had just opened the Pumphouse as an alternative venue and were looking for non-classical acts to play there. (Aldeburgh had offered me the gig after I’d wangled my way into playing at their end of festival party the year before.)

In spite of spending hours each day improvising on the piano for my own sake, I’d never considered doing it publicly. I was committed to writing music for others to perform, and this other thing was just a private hobby.

Consequently, this was the first time I’d performed long-form improvisation in any serious public setting. I can remember the gig clearly: to calm my nerves, and with no green room, I stood out the back of the venue staring across the river, watching the beam of the Orford lighthouse (since decommissioned) come around every 20 seconds, and I took a pint onstage with me.

The piece ‘For Mannie’ is the first 20 minutes I played that night, and was a tribute to Mannie my jazz piano teacher, who had died a few weeks previously (hence the ‘jazz’ outro).

Although it’s rough and raw, and makes me cringe in places, I feel like in this track, there is a voice already in place, emotionally direct, even when obscured by the obvious debt to Jarrett, and I’m so appreciative that someone thought to record the gig that night."
